Watching The Good Dinosaur for the first time and WOW this is such a fascinating train wreck.

It's not good. Not even close. But you can see what they were going for in every scene and how, every time, they somehow managed to shoot just to the left of the target.

It's confusing because it's not without charm. Arlo is genuinely likeable and it has some very charming moments. But wow does it make some odd choices that just makes it hard to not be pulled out of the movie.

DID THEY JUST DO DINOSAUR PTSD??!

Every non-Arlo-like dinosaur has been unhinged in some way so far. Did no one in production notice this?

Like what a confusing choice. Apparently only Apatosauruses are civilized and have discovered farming?

This movie can't decide if it's a cartoon or a nature documentary and the tonal whiplash is incredibly jarring.

Spoke too soon. T-rexes are ranchers. A sentence I never thought I'd type.

There is a Goddamn raptor named Bubba, what the actual fuck lol

This is a movie that will zoom in on a tooth grotesquely embedded in another dinosaur's jaw but will shy away from having T-rexes eating anything. There's been at least 3 occasions where the T-rexes have had other animals fully in their mouths and the creature got out without a scratch.

There's also been other other dinosaur's graphically eating other creatures so I'm just... Confused what the rules are here.

GHOST. DINOSAUR.

Arlo has had a water-related peril at least 4 times so far. Why can't this dinosaur just stay on dry land for five minutes?

OK, the circle around the other humans got me. Good job.

Wait, why did he leave his mark? Why does everyone else leave a mark because they contributed to the family in a major way but that rule does apply to him?

Was the journey the mark? Giving up spot? Fighting off the pterodactyls? Talking to a ghost dinosaur? What is the symbolism here?

Oh, it's over. Guess we'll never know.

My theory of The Good Dinosaur is that someone knew all of the main plot beats they wanted to put in a trailer but that no one on the team could figure out how to stitch it all together. Because certain scenes work very well in isolation, but there's nothing tying it all together.

I think it's similar to what happened with Hancock, in that there were competing scripts and they just fused them together rather than choosing.

There's three plot threads that happen in parallel but bear no real relationship to one another:
- Arlo finds a pet boy
- Arlo gets lost
- Arlo tries to fill his dad's shoes

There's nothing wrong with having multiple plot threads. Stories pull it off all the time.

But not with a single character.

Arlo has like, 5 life lessons to learn in this film, and it's never thematically clear which moral he's learning at any given time.

- He has to learn to be brave and push through fear.
- He has to learn how to be himself
- He has to learn to overcome his prejudice against Spot
- He has to learn to let go of Spot when a pack of humans wants to take him in

None of these are bad plot-lines... they just don't make sense together in one movie.
